To Whom Shall We Go

Passage: John 6:60-71 Speaker: Pastor Lukus Counterman Series: John - That You May Believe

Length: 54 mins 42 secs Plays: 1988

Speaker: Lukus Counterman - During the first part of Jesus’ ministry people were attracted by his teaching and flocked to him. Many attached themselves to this new Rabbi, some wholeheartedly, some very loosely. But then the time came when their allegiance would be tested. The real nature of the claims of Jesus became apparent. The true disciples were sifted from the false, the deep from the shallow. Jesus’ teaching had become such that it was becoming impossible to follow him unreflectively without commitment. And that’s when things began to unravel, at least that’s what it looked like. People began to leave Jesus… in droves. John writes, “Many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.” One scholar wrote, “Chapter six ends on a note of failure.” Jesus seemingly failed. He couldn't keep the crowd, he couldn’t maintain his following, people are abandoning him, and resistance seems to be winning. But whenever it appears that resistance to Jesus is winning in the world, the people of God need a robust and clear vision of God’s sovereignty over all things, including resistance. May the Lord teach us that truth today.
