Passage: 1 Corinthians 14:26-40 Speaker: Pastor Lukus Counterman Series: 1 Corinthians - Pursue Love

Length: 44 mins 53 secs Plays: 223

Speaker: Lukus Counterman - In the Corinthian context, worship gatherings had devolved into unbridled clatter and chaos. People were vying for attention and believed that their personal expressions were more important than the community’s experience. So, in 1 Corinthians 14, Paul corrected the church and guided their worship with three core ideas – edification, intelligibility, and order. As we examine the second half of the chapter, there are echoes of the need to build up the body (edification), and there are allusions to the importance of tongues being interpreted (intelligibility), but the primary focus is orderliness. Since “God is not a God of confusion but of peace” (v. 33), his people should follow his lead in the public gathering of the church. Worship services should be “done decently and in order” (v. 40). As we examine this text, may the Lord help us to pursue order and peace in a way that pleases him.
