Speaker: Lukus Counterman - In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul was writing to Christians who had relegated their sexuality to a mere biological function and saw all its expressions as morally neutral. To that segment of the church, Paul needed to emphasize divinely set boundaries for sex, and the spiritual importance of sexual morality. But the church at Corinth was not monolithic. It was complex and convoluted like many churches today. There was another portion of the congregation that held a very different view on sexuality. They were ascetic, championing an anti-sex, anti-marriage philosophy that was supposedly more spiritual and pleasing to God. To that part of the Corinthian church, Paul emphasized the goodness of marital sex and the blessedness of both marriage and singleness. While addressing a number of other subjects in 1 Corinthians 7, Paul encourages Christians to embrace the situation God has called them to, and bloom where they’re planted.
