Pastor Lukus Counterman - Most simply, our statement says that Gospel Grace Church is a Christian, Evangelical, Baptist church. Our statement of faith is divided into 11 sections, which speak to the fact that we can be called by each of these names. The Historically Christian sections simply show what Christians have always believed, in other words, issues that there has traditionally been little dispute over in Christendom. The Evangelical category highlights the critical issues related to the Gospel that were recovered during the Reformation. The Baptist categories highlight what are distinctive features of Gospel Grace Church which are also true of historic Baptist churches.

Speaker: Lukus Counterman - The Lord responds to human rebellion with both judgment and grace.  We see that in the account of Genesis 3.  God's judgment is tempered by grace when he pursues sinful man, grace when he puts enmity between the serpent and the woman, grace when he promises offspring and food, grace when he makes garments for Adam and Eve, and grace when He promises a future deliverer.  From the story of the fall, it is evident that, "Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more," (Rom. 5:20).  In our text today, what starts as an account of doom, ends with a ray of hope.  Because of sin, creation was frustrated in its purpose to display God's glory.  It was cursed to bring forth briars and thorns. It was subjected to ruin and death.  The place of joy was poisoned and tainted.  What God created to be a habitat of life was transformed into a crucible of death. Man's home became his graveyard.  Since the fall, all creation has groaned continually for a day of redemption. It's that redemption and deliverance that are foreshadowed in (Gen. 3:15). There's no way back to Eden; the only way now is on to glory to join the "Last Adam," who died as the curse for the human race and changed death into life.

The single most important thing about a church is what it believes. The only reason this church exists, the only reason we are gathered together today is because this statement is true – because what we believe matters. What we believe, in fact, is a matter of life and death.

Some Christians are opposed to statements of faith. Christian revelation, Jesus, they say, is too great to be reduced to mere mechanical formulas. In one sense this is true. No statement of faith can perfectly plumb the depths of God’s knowledge and purposes. And yet the good news of Jesus Christ is nonetheless about news, about truths, propositional truths about God, ourselves, Christ, and these truths must be understood, believed, and lived out if we are to have any hope in this life and the life to come. And so what we want to accomplish in the next two weeks is to consider what it is that we as a church believe.

Speaker: Lukus Counterman - In our series, we've already seen God's Word create all good things (Gen 1), and God's Word command the way of life (Gen. 2), but here we see God's Word attacked, twisted and ignored (Gen. 3).  Here the woman listens to the serpent, the man listens to the woman, and no one listens to God.  It is an account of temptation that leads to the fall.  But God doesn't want us to be "outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs" (2Cor. 2:11).  Instead, He wants us to learn how to live victoriously in the face of temptation.  In order to do so, we must have a precise knowledge of the Word of God, a wholehearted trust in the goodness of God, and a reverential awe and obedient fear of God himself.   Deuteronomy 30:19-20 says, "I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse.  Therefore choose life... loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days." May the Lord help us.

Speaker: Lukus Counterman - Without question, the most important part of any church is what the leadership and congregation believe. The word "doctrine" comes from the Latin doctrine which means "a code of beliefs," "a body of teachings," or "instructions." When we speak of biblical doctrine, it refers to the body of timeless, universal, unchanging truths delineated in the teachings, instructions and precepts of Scripture.

These common beliefs comprise the doctrine of the church and are often collected and spelled out in a doctrinal statement. The doctrines in our doctrinal statement are commonly held by the leadership and the congregation, and are representative of what you can expect to hear at all levels and venues of Gospel Grace’s preaching and teaching ministries.

Speaker: Jon Kopp - In Hebrews 10:19-25, the writer shares an incredible truth for those that embrace the work of Jesus on the cross. In our passage and throughout the last few chapters of the book, the writer has been making the case that at the cross, Jesus does something incredible for His people. He overcomes the obstacles that keep man from God. Jesus perfectly performed the laws demands necessary to open up access to God’s presence for all who trust Him. In today’s text, we will see that Jesus has opened a way for God’s people to have direct access to enter His presence with confidence, and as a Christian community we must live like that is true. So, the big thought this morning is: Because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross, Christians approach God in boldness and humility as a community. In this message, we examine that truth, then look at three applications for people that embrace it in faith together.

Every church has a ministry culture – a set of beliefs, values, and customs that characterize the way ministry is carried out in that congregation.

BELIEFS – Core biblical and moral absolutes which drive the ministry.

VALUES – Strong convictions, preferences, tastes, and methodologies derived from the application of the core beliefs which flavor the ministry culture and safeguard its mission.

All churches have a ministry culture. Ministry culture exists either intentionally (driven by the mission, beliefs and values) or unintentionally (set by the whims of the people). Therefore, it is important to understand and intentionally cultivate the right kind of ministry culture at Gospel Grace Church.

Today’s passage zooms in on the account of the creation of the world to narrate how God fashions a perfect environment for his human creatures. As the account unfolds, we will see the personal covenant keeping God provide everything for man and woman: life, a beautiful and functional environment, food, work, moral choice, friendship and marriage, and above everything else, communion with Himself. Last week, chapter 1 showed us "Word of the Lord" as God's mighty means of creation, in chapter 2 the "Word of the Lord" comes in the form of a command that must be obeyed.  God's word brings both provision and prohibition.  It challenges our view of God.  Do you see God as the great provider or the great killjoy. Is your God a giving or restricting God? We hope today’s message shows you God’s care and concern for you as well as His jealousy for His creation.

Because Gospel Grace Church is part of God’s Church, because He bought it with the blood of His Son, and because it is His plan for displaying His glory to the Universe, we desire to be directed and function according to His plan as revealed in the teaching of the Scriptures alone.

Today’s passage opens with God creating the heavens and earth and then ordering the earth so that it could become a dwelling place for Him and His people. Moses (Genesis’ author) has recorded the story of how the all-powerful, transcendent God set everything in place with incredible skill in perfect conformity to his grand design. The whole text points to God. He is the subject and end of this account. His creation and all that is in it is all about Him. Very clearly today, Genesis 1-2 will show us that there is only one God, His word is almighty, and He only has to speak and the world comes into being. He creates for His glory, and He sustains it all for His glory. As we hear God’s word this morning, we must submit to the Sovereign Creator Sustainer.
