Deity & Discipleship

February 05, 2023

Passage: Luke 5:1-32 Speaker: Pastor Lukus Counterman Series: Luke - Past Promises, Present Redemption

Length: 58 mins 44 secs Plays: 247

Speaker: Lukus Counterman - In our text this weekend, fish miraculous fill two boats, a leprous man is healed with a touch, and a lame man’s sins are forgiven just before he stands up and walks. People are shocked to see the power of Jesus – some fall on their faces before him, others can’t stop talking about his work, still others accuse him of blasphemy for acting like God. But can the deity of Jesus be denied? Who among us can heal leprosy? Who among us can command nature? Who among us can forgive sins? None but God. In all these works Jesus proved that his claim to deity was valid. And once that was established, he called disciples to follow him. We’ll learn more about these disciples as we study the text, but surprisingly they don’t seem like the most suitable candidates for the job – they’re fishermen with seaweed on their hands, and a despised tax collector. Well, Jesus didn’t come to call the self-righteous, he came to make disciples out of forgiven sinners who will follow him with unreserved loyalty. May the Lord teach us about his divinity and cause us to follow him with fresh commitment.
